Hello, my name is Patsy Chavarria. Not only am I volunteer for the Compton clean up day, I am also a Lieutenant! I would like to encourage women to come alongside to join the team, and step up as female lieutenants. I've been doing this for 3 years now and loving it!

I worked in our family owned bakery in Compton into my mid 20's and attended Compton Junior College. I personally saw and experienced the decline of the city of Compton and was very eager to help out in the Compton Initiative when it started. I have seen and experienced much joy and reward during these events. Although it is hard work and sometimes not very pleasant, I know that it is only by the grace of God that I am not at the other end of this ministry.

It's incredible to watch what God is doing in our church, in Compton, in our community and in our hearts as a result of people breaking down the walls and painting houses! The kingdom of God comes to Compton when we become the hands and feet of Jesus. We are incredibly blessed to be a part of that!

Because I have friends and family living in Compton I have always been involved with the city. There was a time when I helped to damage and bring harm to Compton and now I am able to be a part of helping to beautify it. I have volunteered my services 7 to 8 times now and plan to be a part of this Compton transformation each opportunity that I have. We have so much fun painting homes, planting flowers, cutting trees, and cleaning yards; I've even painted a few kids in the process.
I have received so much joy and love from the homes that we show up to help. It feels good to know that I am helping to brighten someone else's day. The amazing thing about helping out in Compton is that it seems to bring a certain amount of healing to me especially when I consider some of the harm that I've caused that city. It's so wonderful to know that through me smiling, loving, and painting in Compton I am helping to change a city and make a difference.

“It just feels good to help someone who really needs help. It feels so good to see their faces at the end of the day.”
